About Us
We are Kate and Mike, your average New Zealanders, with jobs and kids. We were looking for ways to improve our heath, but finding the healthy food options weren't always easy, and learnt that our friends and family had the same difficulties too.
It is well known that the food industry fills up our food with non-desirable ingredients, but found that some of the so called healthy food products contained other non-desirable substitutes, were still high in sugar empty carbs, fillers, or worse.
We grew a strong desire to offer products that have nothing to hide and keep up with the latest studies in human nutrients, and to do so by making all this quality natural food more accessible and affordable for New Zealanders. Bear with us while we build our business to what eventually will be a one-stop place to get the items you usually have to hunt for and visit several shops for. Beyond the quality of food, we also recognize ethical trading, sustainability and supporting small local businesses in New Zealand and the Pacific region.
Many concerning factors prove the importance of such goal, some of them are:
- An epidemic of type 2 diabetes is occurring in New Zealand (as in other developed countries), driven mainly by demographic trends and the increasing prevalence of overweight and obesity. [Ministry of Health New Zealand]
- Over 225,000 New Zealanders have type 1 or type 2 diabetes. And every day 50 more people are diagnosed with diabetes. Many people have pre-diabetes and don’t know it. [Ministry of Health New Zealand]
- The child obesity rate has increased from 8% in 2006/07, to 10% in 2011/12 (in children aged 2–14 years). A further 21% of children were overweight. [Ministry of Health New Zealand]
- Between 1998 and 2008 the number of cancer registrations increased by 22 percent. [Ministry of Health New Zealand]
- New Zealand is rated in the ‘top five countries’ overall for asthma prevalence (ISAAC study). It could be assumed therefore that food allergy rates in New Zealand will be at similar level too. [Allergy New Zealand]
- Up to 5% of the population overall are likely to have a food allergy in New Zealand, that is 200,000 people. [Allergy New Zealand]
- And we could carry on with the list forever.....
